J. Vanderlei Martins

Dr. J. Vanderlei Martins is a Professor in the Department of Physics of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where is the founding director of the Earth and Space Institute. Vanderlei is the PI of the HARP CubeSat satellite, and the HARP2 imaging polarimeter scheduled to fly in the NASA PACE mission. He has also been part of the MODIS and the Glory satellite teams. He has participated in several aircraft campaigns and is the PI for multiple airborne instruments like AirHARP, the polarized Imaging nephelometer (PI-Neph), the Open Imaging Nephelometer (Open-INeph), and many other instruments. In addition to its association to UMBC, Vanderlei is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the AirPhoton small business, where he leads the development of multiple instruments for the in situ and remote sensing measurements of aerosol and cloud particles. Dr. Martins obtained his PhD from the Institute of Physics at the University of São Paulo in 1999, with student fellowships at the University of Washington and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
